Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic condition requiring continuous treatment, particularly among the elderly. In Mojogedang Health Center, Karanganyar District, families often lack essential skills in recognizing and responding to early signs of Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA), a severe and potentially fatal complication of DM. This community service program aimed to bridge this gap by improving family members’ capacity to perform first-response measures during DKA episodes. The intervention was conducted in December 2023 and involved families of elderly DM patients as target partners. The program consisted of structured education sessions through lectures, group discussions, and interactive dialogue, supported by informative booklets. A five-stage approach was implemented: cross-sector meetings, community dialogues, needs assessments, educational interventions, and follow-up monitoring through WhatsApp communication. Results showed a notable increase in participants’ understanding and readiness to handle DKA, as evidenced by pre- and post-intervention knowledge scores. Families reported feeling more confident in recognizing symptoms and taking initial actions. This activity demonstrated the importance of tailored community health education and its positive impact on empowering caregivers in chronic disease management. Future programs are recommended to include continuous mentoring and integration into local elderly health initiatives such as Posyandu Lansia. The collaboration with Mojogedang Health Center and community cadres proved vital to the success and sustainability of this effort.
