Abstract

Hypertension is a chronic disease commonly found in society and has the potential to cause various complications. This study aimed to determine the effect of progressive muscle relaxation therapy on reducing blood pressure in patients with hypertension. This quantitative study employed a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group design. The sample consisted of 40 respondents divided into an intervention group (n=20) receiving progressive muscle relaxation therapy and a control group (n=20) performing brisk walking activity. Blood pressure measurements were conducted before and after the intervention. The results showed a significant reduction in systolic and diastolic blood pressure in the intervention group, with a p-value of 0.001 (p < 0.05), while the control group showed no significant change, with a p-value of 1.000 (p > 0.05). In conclusion, progressive muscle relaxation therapy has an effect on lowering blood pressure and can be used as a safe, simple, and easily applied non-pharmacological intervention.
